Before you choose a licensing API plan or size your own validation server, you need a rough idea of how many key checks your installed base will generate. The number surprises people: a modest product with a few thousand licenses, a couple of devices each and a check on every launch can produce hundreds of thousands of calls a month, with sharp peaks when everyone opens the app on a Monday morning.

The estimate multiplies active licenses by devices per license and by checks per device per day to get daily calls, then scales to a 30-day month. Average requests per second is daily calls divided by the seconds in a day, and peak is that average multiplied by the peak factor you set. The cost line subtracts any calls included in your plan and applies your per-thousand price to the rest. Change the check frequency to see how much a longer cache or heartbeat interval saves.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter how many licenses are actively in use and the average number of devices each one is activated on.
  2. Set how often each device validates its key per day, including launch checks and background heartbeats.
  3. Adjust the peak multiplier and your plan details, then read the monthly call count, the average and peak request rates, and the estimated overage cost.

What the math assumes

  • A month is treated as 30 days and a day as 86,400 seconds for the rate conversions.
  • Every activated device performs the same number of checks per day; no allowance is made for devices that are switched off or offline.
  • Peak requests per second is simply the daily average multiplied by the peak factor you enter; the tool does not model burst patterns beyond that.
  • Calls included in your plan are deducted before pricing, and the per-thousand price applies only to the remainder. The default price of $0.05 per 1,000 is a placeholder, not a market rate.
  • Failed retries, activation and deactivation calls, and admin API traffic are not included; add them to checks per day if they matter for you.

Frequently asked questions

How many validation checks per day is reasonable?

There is no single right answer. Many desktop apps check once at launch and then trust a cached result for a day or more, which keeps this near 1. A short heartbeat every hour pushes it to 24 and multiplies your call volume accordingly, so the interval is a real cost decision.

Should I size my server for the average or the peak rate?

Size for the peak with headroom. A validation endpoint that handles the average comfortably but falls over at the start of the workday will lock legitimate customers out at the worst possible moment.

What if my provider charges per active license instead of per call?

Then the cost line does not apply to you; set the price to 0 and use the call count and request rates only. The volume numbers are still useful for judging whether a plan tier or your own infrastructure can handle the load.
